Review | No dog: `101 Dalmatians Musical' fun for kids, adults
The 101 Dalmatians Musical , here for a very short stay at the Arsht Center, is one of the most imaginatively staged and thoroughly entertaining examples of children's theater in recent memory -- and provides chaperones with just enough grown-up chuckles and tugs at the heartstrings that they won't be bored. They might even enjoy it.
It's not fun for the whole family like The Lion King : Teenagers will hate it and discriminating adults will get jaded by the indefatigably wholesome messages of self-confidence and animal rights embedded in the score by B.T. McNicholl and Dennis DeYoung.
But Broadway pros led by expert director Jerry Zaks have created a surprisingly solid show that premiered in Minneapolis in October and plays Madison Square Garden in April.
From the first yips and yelps sampled in the overture, this production is no flea-bitten stray. The lush production travels with 30 actors (including four adults and eight children who anthropomorphically impersonate dogs), a healthy-sized orchestra and 15 canine performers (many of them rescued from shelters).
