How would you define cruel and unusual punishment?

Can you think of any currently lawful punishments you believe are cruel and unusual?

2. Do you support the death penalty? Why or why not? Could you be an executor or witness to an execution?

I would define it as any type of punishment that deliberately causes pain, suffering, humiliation, or bodily harm for a prolonged period of time, or that intentionally causes excrutiating pain or humiliation over a short period of time.

One of the best and most common examples I can think of that fits this definition or idea is imprisonment. It seems media, politicians, and some of the general public believe prison is a humane and preferable punishment for criminal behavior. If one considers living most of the time in a 6' x 10' cell, often with another another person and up to 23 hours per day, being subject to beatings, stabbings, humiliation, rape, isolation, and any number of other threats on a daily basis to be neither cruel nor unusual, then I must possibly have the wrong idea about the meaning of this phrase. But then what is the alternative?

Capital punishment for one thing, which is why it has my support. It is final justice for the perpetrator, and there is absolutely no further chance after execution that they can harm anyone again, whether citizen or fellow inmate. It also provides this peace of mind to the family of the victim(s). I am concerned about executing innocent people, but I am more concerned with allowing a murderer to be paroled only to risk the lives of many more innocent people.

There is certainly plenty of room for criminal justice reform in this county. Certain types of narcotics, particularly marijuana, could be decriminalized at the least, meaning less stringent sentencing. This would take care of much of the prison overcrowding traditionally and currently taking place throughout the correctional system. And if the court system will be vigilant about "life without parole," then that would make me feel a little bit safer.

Even so, we still need to house, feed, clothe, and attend to the well being of often hardened murderers and rapists. The way the prison system works currently, someone needs to attend to these inmates, and each day such people place themselves at great risk. Many are the cases of guards, counselors, prison employees, and prisoners being harmed or killed by violent inmates. Would these people be considered "innocent?"

I'm not certain how I would react to being given the responsibility of executioner. But I would try to do my duty if called upon. Would you be willing to work at a prison as guard, counselor, or another position? If not, then why?

(Before everything went to hell, and Shelley Winters was forced to swim through the ocean with a rope between her teeth), and it just doesn’t look like something I’d enjoy.

It appears that novelty hats would be involved (correct?), along with loads of strangers invading my personal space and blowing through cheap Chinese-made noise-amplifiers.  I mean, seriously.  Who needs it?

And speaking of being cool and cutting-edge, we got a new hot water tank installed yesterday.  How great is that?  Yeah, just when I start sounding like a burned-out old fogey, I hit you with something vibrant and exciting.  Dammit, I refuse to be pigeonholed.
