How do I go about hiring someone to clean my apartment?
I have never had anyone clean my home before and Im looking for someone to do it every few weeks or so. Do you check references when it's a company and not just an individual? Do you give them a key? Not sure where to start and dont want to come home after work to find my apartment cleaned out!
You can use Craigslist or a maid service company. Most maids are not at all interested in stealing from you. They just want to work, like you do. Check references and use your basic instinct about a person. If they do not seem honest or hardworking or real to you, tell them you will get back to them and interview someone else. If a company, they do back ground checks, but that still does not mean that they might not steal from you. It has happened. Again, most of the time people do not want to do that. You turn your key over to the company if you plan on being gone. If you wish to hire an individual, see how it goes for couple of months before you trust them with a key. A company will charge about $80 per hour and a private maid will, of course, charge less. Yes, you can check references for companies, too.
To be perfectly frank, there is no licensing for maid's work; they may have a business license, but there is no governing body for maids and housekeepers. They may have liability insurance, but all that means is that they will have money to cover something if it gets broken.
Most people have a couple before they finally find someone they really like. Be at home the first time they clean and see what you think. Be honest and adult about things; I think you will find someone trustworthy and a good worker if you choose carefully. You might ask around for someone who has household help and see if they can recommend someone, too.

I know about maidservice because I used to work for one of the several companies available. Not one person was accused of stealing while I was there. However, I did hear of one maid who had been dismissed about three years before I got there; the company fired her and just replaced the item that was deemed "stolen". No one was taken to court because it was too hard to prove that she did in fact take anything; but it was the second time it had happened regarding the same employee. Hmmmm.
But private maids can also have liability insurance.
Maid freeze until new MoU
PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry will not approve new applications for Indonesian maids until a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the matter is signed.
Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Mahmood Adam said Malaysian employers would just have to bear with the delay as both countries have agreed to freeze new approval for Indonesian maids until a new agreement was signed.
He said the delay not deliberate as the ministry understood the difficulties faced by prospective employers, especially those with special needs.
He said both countries had agreed to hold discussions and sign a new MoU following Indonesia’s demands to look into a number of issues relating to the employment of their domestic maids here, including on the issue of a weekly day off.
“The next meeting between Malaysia and Indonesia on the issue will hopefully be held here soon, and we are hoping that we can conclude all the discussions and sign the new MoU then,” he said when contacted.
