Magic the Gathering instant spells destroy defender, does attacker do damage to owner?
I'm playin through the challenges on MTG: duels of the planeswalker on xbox live arcade, I've tried on a few different ones to destroy the creatures defending against my heavy hitters, I destroy the defenders, my creature attacks the player, but NO damage is dealt... Is this because of the rules, or because there's only one specific way to win the challenges, and the devs don't like me thinking outside the box?
In the actual rules of the Magic card game, you have to kill a creature BEFORE it has been declared as a blocker during combat if you want your creature to get through. Once the declare blockers step begins, if a blocker is declared as blocking your creature, your creature is blocked. Therefore, even if the blocker is destroyed or removed, your creature is still blocked and deals no damage.
Of course, if the attacker has Trample, it works a little differently, since any damage the Trampling creature deals over the blocker's toughness goes through to the defender. So if your creature has trample, they block, and you remove the blocker, your Trampler will still deal damage to the opponent since the toughness of the blocker is effectively nothing, since it isn't there.

HONOLULU — Nevada can’t blame this one on turnovers. It can’t blame this one on penalties or the referees or anything else for that matter.
Southern Methodist University obliterated the Wolf Pack 45-10 in the 2009 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on Thursday night at Aloha Stadium.
In its previous four losses this year, the Wolf Pack could attribute its woes to self-inflicted wounds like penalties and turnovers.
But that wasn’t the case Thursday where Nevada entered as a 14-point favorite.
Simply put, SMU, which was playing in its first bowl game since 1984, manhandled Nevada in every phase of the game.
The Mustangs outgained the Wolf Pack 332 to 101 in the first half and jumped out to a 38-0 lead midway through the third quarter.
It took the Mustangs just three offensive plays to score its first touchdown of the game, which came on a nine-yard touchdown run from running back Shawnbrey McNeal. The score was set up by a picture-perfect 71-yard pass and run from quarterback Kyle Padron to wide receiver Cole Beasley.
